Doom. It conjures up several imagery of demons, a shotgun, and a story of a lone marine who can single-handedly fight off the hordes of Hell. What else can be done with the title? According to Bethesda Softwork’s Pete Hines, a lot. Notably, Doom 4 will “show the world id Software’s true potential” when it is released. Little information has been available on the title since its announcement with the exception that Graham Joyce (Dreamside, Requiem) will be writing it.
Hines’ quote comes from MCV Magazine:
I’m curious what kind of potential can be squeezed out of the franchise. To be honest, while Doom 3, was graphically pretty awesome, the gameplay felt very flat to me. Especially in a time where we have games like Modern Warfare or Bad Company, which are both graphically stunning and very fun to play. That aside, Doom 4 will certainly be a game that will be on everyone’s radar, whether or not they play first-person shooters, because the Doom series is one of the granddaddies of modern video gaming.
id Software brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the first person shooter genre. To have a group like id working as an internal studio for Bethesda is a tremendous advantage. I think what they’re working on with RAGE and Doom 4 is going to show the world their true potential.
Rage, id’s post-apocalyptic shooter, will be pitting players in a world where an asteroid has rendered the world a terrible place to inhabit. A far change from the common space-corridor shooter you’re used to, id’s branching off into a much more organic setting with rocks, water, and trees. Players and enemies alike have been injected with nano-machines that helped them to survive the harsh conditions, as well as give them some new abilities (ala Bioshock). There will be some unique weapons and gadgets that will be accessible, too, like remote control cars that double as bombs.
I’m glad id’s moving away from space with a game like Rage, but it seems like it could merely be a mix between Bioshock, Borderlands, and Fallout 3. That could be a good thing, since those are all very good games, but I remain skeptical until I see more on it.
Either way, we can all expect to see some more details creep out when QuakeCon occurs August 12-15 in Texas.
Doom 4, like every other game id Software has released, will be available when it’s done. Rage is scheduled for release on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, some time next year. A Mac version is also reportedly in the works.
