Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a game that celebrates the history of Dragon Ball in a lot of ways. A lot of the major story arcs from the series’ history are represented throughout, taking players through many of Goku’s most memorable moments. Yet, Kakarot also features quite a few minor retcons or fixes that could have major implications to the canon, depending on how one interprets it.

One thing that isn’t up to interpretation though, is that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot still holds true to the series love of climactic fight scenes. There are plenty of ways to upgrade a character’s skills and abilities, but upgrading Super Attacks might just be one of the most helpful abilities to focus on. These abilities won’t all come for free though, as there are a handful of methods to go about unlocking and using the many different Super Attacks in the game.

About Super Attacks

Before players dive deep into the methods of unlocking the Super Attacks of their choice, it can be helpful to know a little bit about them and what they do. Super Attacks are aptly named moves that are used during combat and are absolutely invaluable during certain boss battles. The Super Attack palette can be brought up during battle by pressing L1 or the Left Bumper of the controller. Mixing up the bumpers is a common mistake in DBZ: Kakarot, so be mindful of what trigger opens up the palette.

It’s also important to remember that Super Attacks require Ki to use. Ki is represented by the blue bar and number underneath the character portrait. One very helpful tip for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is that charging up Ki takes very little time during crucial moments, so players should always be aware of how much they have left.

Unlocking Super Attacks

There are several ways to go about unlocking Super Attacks. First and foremost, some Super Attacks can be unlocked simply by progressing through the game’s mainstory. However, players will still have to make sure those Super Attacks are slotted in the palette to use them. Additionally, some Super Attacks require players to reach a certain level first.

To unlock Super Attacks, open the main menu, select characters and select the chosen character. Then, press the Y or Triangle button to open that character’s skill tree. Most Super Attacks require unlocking multiple sequences before the Super Attack can be used.

To unlock Super Attacks, players are going to need a lot of D medals and Z orbs. Both of these items can be found by roaming around the game’s open world or by completing side quests. Thankfully, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is adding a time machine for players to complete quests they may have missed. Finally, Super Attacks can also be unlocked by completing certain training missions at the training grounds.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
