Functions and Commands to Remember

First, before we talk about how to set reminders on Slack, we need to discuss a few easy functions and commands that you can use on Slack to set reminders easily.

Simply put, the commands are as follows:

  • Typing in ‘/remind’ marks the beginning of a reminder. If you’d like to set a reminder for someone else, you’ll want to type in [@someone or # channel] based on if you want to remind a specific person or people in a specific channel.Typing in [what] refers to the reminder message itself. So if you want to have a reminder of what you need or want to do, you’d type in something like ‘/remind me to send an email to customer a’.If you want to set a reminder for a specific time, you’ll want to type in [when]. This is great for recurring reminders. To edit any of your reminders, you’ll need to navigate to your own Slack channel and type ‘/remind list.If you want to create a reminder based on a message you received, you’ll need to select the three dots or long-press on the message, then select “Remind me about this” and follow the directions.

Log In to Slack

Before you can set up a reminder, you’ll need to log in to the Slack workspace that you want to use.

Go to a Channel or Your Own Channel

Once you’ve logged in, you can either go to a channel where you want to set the reminder (like the #general channel) or go to your own space (just click on your name on the left-hand side).

Type In /Remind

After you’ve chosen the channel where you want to set up the reminder, now is the time to create the command. I chose my own channel to show you how it all works.

Choose to Remind Someone Else or Yourself

If you’re setting up a reminder for someone else in your Slack workspace, the @ symbol or the # symbol should always come before their name. You’ll also need to do this if you’re setting up a reminder for an entire channel. This is a great option if you’re setting up a team meeting or need to set up a poll for multiple members.

If you’re setting up a reminder for yourself, you can use ‘me’ without the @ symbol. I chose to remind myself, and you’ll see how I set it up in the following step.

Set Up The Reminder

If you choose the option to remind yourself, a box will pop up asking you when you want to set up the reminder and what you want it to say. You can choose any time or date in the future.

Click Save

After you’ve typed out your reminder, simply click the ‘Save’ button and the reminder will be set up!

Another Option: Type In Your Command Completely

If you don’t want to use the reminder box, or if you want to set up a recurring reminder, you can type in your reminder command completely.

To do so, you’ll again need to start with the /remind command, and either type in ‘me’ or the channel or person (preceded by @ or #).

Again, I chose to remind myself, and I wanted to set up a recurring reminder. So, I typed in; /remind me to drink water at 3pm every day.

Once you’ve typed out your command, press enter or click the green triangle to set up the reminder. The Slack bot will pop up and let you know if your command succeeded and if the reminder was set up. If you made a mistake in setting up a reminder, it will also show you how to troubleshoot.
