The pin is optional if you are not worried about parental controls or accidental purchases. But we highly recommend it for Rokus in Airbnb or shared spaces.
The only downside of setting up a Pin for your Roku is that you have to do it through Roku’s website. You cannot do it on Roku itself.
In this article, we will be going over both setting up and resetting a pin on your Roku. Without further ado, let’s learn how to create a pin for your Roku!
Creating a Pin for Your Roku
1. Go to Roku.com
In the web browser of your choice, navigate to Roku.com and sign into your account if you are not already.
2. Click on My Account.
In the top right corner of the website, click on the profile icon. From that drop-down menu, click on My Account.
3. Update Your Pin Preference
On the My Account page, you will see three main options. Click on Update underneath where it says PIN Preference.
4. Create a Pin
After selecting Update, you will be brought to a page that says Choose Your PIN Preferences. On this page, click on Create PIN.
Once you have clicked on it, a small box will pop up that will allow you to create a 4-digit pin.
5. Change when you need to enter a PIN (optional).
Now that you have a pin created below, there are two options where you can choose when you need to enter a pin and the level you want to set parental controls.
After you made these changes click on Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
Resetting Your Pin for Roku
1. Go to Roku.com.
With the browser of your choice, navigate to Roku.com and log into your account if you are not already. If you don’t remember your Roku account login info. Select Forgot Password and follow the instructions on the website.
Click on the profile icon in the top right corner of the Roku website. Then, from the drop-down menu, click on My Account.
After clicking on My Account, you will be taken to a page with 3 primary options. To continue resetting your pin, click on Update under PIN Preference.
4. Change Your Pin
On the Choose Your PIN Preferences page, click on Change PIN. It is worth noting that you do not need to remember your old Pin to reset or make a new one. After you make this change click on Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
Updating Your Preferences for Roku PIN
Now that you have made or reset your PIN, you might want to change when your Roku asks for your PIN and what level you want to set parental controls at. This section will cover what these choices mean and what we recommend them for.
Require a PIN to Make Purchases and Add Channels
If you select this setting for your PIN preferences, you will have to enter your 4-digit PIN every time you make a purchase or install a new streaming channel. This setting is a bit extreme for the personal use of a Roku, but if you have a lot of housemates, this setting might be the best option.
Require a PIN to Make Purchases
This option will just require you to enter your PIN when you are trying to purchase your Roku. We suggest this PIN setting for AirBnBs so your guests can install the channels they want to watch but cannot make any purchases.
A PIN is Not Required to Make Any Purchases or Add Any Channels
This option turns off the requirement to enter your PIN at all on your Roku. This option works best if you have created a PIN previously, but now you don’t want to have to enter a PIN anymore. Also, if you are the only user of the Roku, there are not many reasons to have a PIN turned on.
What Parental Control Levels Should I Set?
When you have a PIN on your Roku, one of the main advantages is the different levels of parental controls you can set on your device. You have 4 levels of parental control to choose from. The first level, which we recommend for little kids, allows you to watch content rated at G, TV-Y, and TV-G without needing to enter the PIN.
The second level we recommend is for young kids about kindergarten age or older. This level allows you to view PG and TV-PG without needing your PIN. Finally, the third and last level is what we recommend for teens. At this level, you can watch PG-13 and TV-14 without entering your PIN.
