With the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation come and gone, players are now able to access some of their favorite classic Super Nintendo titles through Nintendo Switch online. The announcement revealed that twenty titles will first be made available, and much like the release of NES titles over the last year, we can expect regular additions to the library, likely on a monthly schedule.
The service should be live later in the day on September 5. Accessing the library of games is not an overly complicated process, and there are even some special offers to consider as well for fans who want a feeling of nostalgia in the form of a SNES controller made especially for the Nintendo Switch.
How To Sign Up For Nintendo Switch Online
The Nintendo Switch Online service is similar in theme to Xbox Live, or PlayStation Plus. Accessing it can be done in a number of ways. The most straightforward method is to first ensure that your Switch is up to date.
This can be checked by going into System Settings from the Home screen. From there, head to System, selected System Update, and you will then see if the console needs to download anything, or if it is already up to date.
From there, head to the Nintendo eShop, and on the left-hand side there will be an option to select Nintendo Switch Online. One can either select a free 7-day trial or pay for longer access right off the bat. At the moment, a yearly subscription goes for about $20.
Finally, it seems that certain games will include subscriptions for the service. Tetris 99 for example is one game that has become more popular than people first thought it would be. It’s physical release comes with a 12-month subscription, which is useful considering that the main lure of the game is to play in its Battle Royale style against other players.
It is also important to note that the service is required for most games if you wish to play online. Splatoon 2 or Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 3 are two examples of titles that work great with friends online, but that need an active subscription online to play. Two notable exceptions to this requirement are Warframe and Fortnite. It also keeps cloud saves available for use.
How To Find And Download The Super Nintendo App
Some users are reporting not seeing an official change in the online system, and that they may need to download an app that will look similar to the Nintendo Entertainment System app. For now, we can only speculate for another day or so, but the instruction is likely to appear front and center in the News notifications of your console.
Games You Can Play
Check out the list below to see what will be launching at first. There are a number of great classics that could take quite a bit of time to get through.
Super Mario World is perhaps the most well-known and familiar of the titles. Of the games in the series, it was the first to offer an explorable map that could be slowly chipped at in terms of completion with a save function. Similar to recent games, defeating Bowser could be done in one sitting, especially if one uses the Back Door to the final level. However, completing the full game and accessing the strange universe where Koopa shells are replaced with Mario masks, that take a bit more time and dedication.
As for the rest, some are more familiar than others, Pilotwings is a fantastic game that had no business being a full release. The entire game can be defeated relatively quickly and feels more like a tutorial for a much longer game about flight simulation. Still, it is great fun, even though it was too short on its original release.
Special Controller
Finally, there is a special controller made for the Switch that looks exactly like the original SNES controllers. Similar to the SNES controllers, it can only be purchased by subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online service.
