Of all the core modes within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the Spec-Ops missions have arguably been the messiest portion of the game. Following the controversy regarding the PlayStation’s exclusive Survival mode, players quickly found that Spec Ops in general was extremely challenging, fairly buggy, and featured unfair enemy spawns that made it nearly unplayable. Worse yet, some players reported another major issue with the game mode that rendered it entirely unplayable.
Following the rocky launch of Spec Ops in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, some players began reporting a re-download error screen that appears when trying to access it from the main menu of the game. Until now, there was no way around this error, meaning impacted players would just simply have to ignore that part of the game. Infinity Ward continues to investigate the issue, but the Trello board continues to show it as In Progress, without a potential fix date.
Without a solution in sight, one player has discovered a way to finally get through the error. RageDriver2401 posted his solution on the subReddit for the game and thankfully it’s much easier than originally thought.
How To Fix The Spec Ops Error
Before booting into the game, head over to the online PlayStation Store or the Library. Find Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in the game list and then check the Add Ons section to find all available and installed items for the game.
Players should see a 16GB Spec Ops pack in this list that is available for download. If there’s a 12GB pack, remove/cancel that option and make sure to download the 16GB which solves the error problem. Keep in mind that this isn’t an official fix from Infinity Ward, though the success rate for players impacted by the error is extremely high. It is worth noting that the fix hasn’t worked for everyone unfortunately.
While the Spec Ops error has no doubt been frustrating for many players, it’s not the only current issue plaguing the game. Spawn points on maps like Shipment continue to be problematic for players, a few other recently discovered bugs are making online matches even more difficult. One bug in particular can make players invisible during a match when a certain costume is equipped. A good portion of the community continues to discuss a major data corruption bug that causes a major stat reset, something that Infinity Ward is working on correcting in an upcoming patch.
