If you want a Mac with a neat and organized desktop, then you need to know how to create a folder on Mac. After all, the desktop is where most people store the majority of their folders and documents. It’s a good idea to have your desktop look neat and tidy.

This article should be a good read if it’s the first time you’ve ever created a folder on Mac. Let’s start off by going over the basics of what folders are and how they work.

What is a Folder on Mac?

A Mac folder is a window you can use to store and organize different files. You can create folders on your Mac desktop, on the inside of windows, within documents, and more.

The main purpose of a folder on a Mac is to keep your files contained and organized in one place. When you store all of your files in the same place, it’s much easier to find them later if you need them.

This is one of the main reasons that we create folders in the first place. If we keep all of our files in separate places, then finding them becomes a hassle and requires you to manually search for it. But, with designated folders to store all your files, we can access them much faster.

You can name each folder its own unique name, which is visible on your desktop so you know which files belong in it and can search for files with ease.

Creating a Folder on Mac

When you create a folder on Mac, you’ll be able to choose its name. You can also add the name of your choosing to the icon that goes along with it. Here’s how to do it.

Method 1

Step 1: Navigate to your Mac’s desktop.

Step 2: Right-click your mouse or use two fingers to right-click your trackpad.

A new menu will appear when you right-click or two-finger tap on your trackpad. You should see the option for “New Folder” within this menu.

Step 3: Select “New Folder” from the popup menu.

This will cause a new folder to appear on your Mac’s desktop. The name of this folder will be highlighted in blue, so you can change it if you’d like.

Method 2

Step 1: Using the Finder, navigate to the Desktop tab.

Go to your Mac’s desktop and click on an empty space somewhere on it.

Once you’ve done that, the icons on the very top left of your screen (in a menu bar) will change, and next to the Apple symbol (an apple) it will read “File,” Finder,” and so on. This bar on the top of your screen is called the Finder’s spotlight menu bar.

It can only be accessed when you’re on your Mac’s desktop, so be sure to minimize or close out any open programs, like Chrome or Safari. If you have Chrome open, for example, the spotlight menu bar will instead read “Chrome,” “File,” “Edit,” and so on, and each will have different options. So, be sure you are on your desktop.

Step 2: Click on “File” next to “Finder.”

In between the Apple symbol and “Finder” is the File tab. Click on this, and it will open a menu that contains a list of options.

Step 3: Click “New Folder” from the dropdown menu.

Once you’re at the File dropdown menu, click on New Folder. This is the second option on the list of options. Doing this will bring up a window that lets you create a new folder on Mac.

Why Create a Folder on Your Mac?

There are many reasons you should create a folder on Mac. If you’re unsure, here are different reasons why it’s a good idea.

It’s Easier to Find Your Files

It Keeps Your Desktop Neat and Tidy
