As the needs of your Slack workspace change, the function of your Slack channels may also vary. This may mean that you’ll want to update the channel’s names to avoid starting anew and losing previous messages, documents, polls, and more. Here’s how to change a Slack channel name and keep all of your work.

What to Remember
First, it’s important to keep in mind that you can only change a Slack channel name if you are the administrator of the workspace or have permission to do so from the owner or administrator.
Second, while you can name a Slack channel just about anything, it will need to be lowercase, with no spaces, and less than 80 characters. So try to think of simple terms if you have a longer project, team, or channel name.
How to Change A Slack Channel Name
There are two different ways to change a channel name, and we’ll show you both options. First, let’s start with the easiest of the two ways.
Step 1: Log In to Slack
In order to make any changes to a channel, you’ll first need to be logged in to Slack. Once you do that, you can click on the channel you want to rename on the left-hand side of your workspace.
Step 2: Click the Dropdown Button
Now that you’re in the channel that you want to rename, you’ll need to click on the upside-down arrow to make your changes. Once you click on that, a new pop-up will show up with the settings of the channel.
Step 3: Edit Channel Name
From here, you can name the channel anything you want. I started with “testing” and renamed it “newchannel” to showcase how it looks when you update it.

Step 4: Save Changes
After you’ve changed the name, simply click the ‘Save changes’ button and Slack will automatically reflect the new name.
Another Way to Change A Slack Channel Name
You can also change a channel name right from the left-hand dashboard. To do this you’ll want to right-click on the channel name you want to change, choose the ‘View channel details’ option, and proceed with steps three and four as normal.
Wrap Up
There’s no need to eliminate dormant channels and establish new ones when you can simply rename them. And, this means you can keep the channels active and avoid the hassle of changing a whole team over!
