When it comes to gym memberships, canceling can actually be quite tough. Many gyms don’t allow you to cancel over the phone and have a process that forces you to talk to their sales team before quitting. Today, we are going to explore the two different options to cancel your Planet Fitness membership, one of which doesn’t require you to leave your house. Let’s get started!

What are the Two Ways to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership?

Gyms can be a bit sharklike when it comes to membership. They make it really easy to sign up, but canceling isn’t always the easiest. Different companies have different policies, and Planet Fitness definitely has one of the most ancient policies around. Sadly, they don’t allow a current member to cancel online or over the phone. Why? Because they know that the harder it is to cancel, the less likely you are to do it.

There are two methods to cancel your Planet Fitness membership: in-person and via mail. Additionally, some gyms will allow a temporary account hold (sometimes for up to three months) in the case of an injury. If your local club allows for this, a simple call explaining the situation is usually all it takes. Otherwise, read on!

How to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership in Person

Step 1: Head to Your Local Club

The most straightforward option for most people is to cancel their membership in person. The first thing you will need to do is go to your local club (the one where you signed up). According to the Planet Fitness website, this can’t be done at any other club besides the one that you signed up at.

Step 2: Talk to the Front Desk and Ask for a Cancellation Form

Once you get to the gym, go to the front desk and ask for a cancellation form. The front desk will then provide you with a specialized form that allows you to “formally” cancel your plan with them. Be aware, they will try everything in their power to keep you from filling out that form. Even more, they might offer special deals and reduced pricing, as long as you don’t submit the form!

Step 3: Fill Out and Turn in the Form

Stay strong! Once you pry the form from the customer service desk attendant’s hands, all you need to do is fill it out. It will ask a few questions and the form will likely be submitted to the sales department.

It’s possible they call you within the next few days, hoping to stop you before the form officially cancels, but you don’t have to reapply or anything like that.

Once you’ve filled out the form and turned it in, it will cancel on the next payment cycle.

How to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership via Mail

Step 1: Write a Letter to Your Local Club

As ancient as it sounds, the only way to cancel a membership without going in person is to send the gym a letter. In order to do that, simply write a short letter explaining that you will be canceling your membership, effective immediately. Make sure that the letter includes:

  • Your full nameDate of birthEmail addressAddressPhone numberLast four digits of your credit card numberPlanet Fitness Membership ID numberSignature

If you don’t include each of these things, they may intentionally delay your cancellation.

Step 2: Print it Out

Once you’ve written the letter, print it out and put it in an envelope. While you could handwrite a letter, potential errors and misreadings could delay the process, which is why we recommend printing if possible.

Step 3: Send it to Your Local Club

Once it’s printed, send it to your local club. This is extremely important, as you don’t want to send it to any other Planet Fitness location besides the one that you specifically signed up at, otherwise delays could ensue.

Planet Fitness recommends that you send it via certified mail to ensure a speedy delivery and certified reception.

In theory, this is all you need in order to cancel your membership, although they may reach out to try and convince you to stay. Additionally, it might be valuable to follow up once the letter has been received, just to make sure everything was processed.
