The Star Wars series is one of the most beloved film franchises ever made and naturally there have been plenty of spin-offs from the original movies. There have been a host of excellent games that have accompanied the franchise, but this has also led to the issue of spoilers being shared in online games. While some may resort to completely disconnecting from the online world until they can get to the cinema, there are more practical ways to avoid details about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and still play games.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was an unusual addition to the film franchise and broke a great deal of the conventions that had seemed to be set in stone. In the wake of the movie, Battlefront players began reporting movie spoilers. Many players changed their user names to give away details of the film, so playing the game inevitably led to spoilers of one of the most unpredictable, albeit controversial, Star Wars films. While Battlefront 2 may not have the largest fanbase, fans who want to avoid facts about the movie may want to tread carefully if they do boot up the game. Equally, there are new threats with new marketing strategies implemented by Disney.

Fortnite has recently begun releasing skins for Star Wars characters and the number of fans this attracts could increase the risk of spoilers. Similarly, user names could be changed to provide damaging information for players. It is worth noting that any online game that allows players to communicate allows for the chance of spoilers. Yet in the case of Fortnite, the risk is increased because of the amount of Star Wars fans that may start playing the game because of the exclusive content.

These players may voice their opinions on the film after seeing the feature, so after the release of the film, playing alongside strangers could be a dangerous strategy. While there’s no certainty that this will happen, those who would rather be safe than sorry may want to steer clear from online games, especially ones with Star Wars content.

The benefit of being online is exclusive content and teasers, through a partnership Fortnite has managed to offer this before the release of the next film. There are clips of the new Star Wars film in Fortnite, but these haven’t contained too much information about the film and fans may want to see the videos before an influx of spoilers arrives. After the film is released, seeing the content may prove too perilous for those who want to see the new title with fresh eyes.

A huge part of avoiding spoilers is dodging communication with strangers online. Online chats in any game may also lead to information being leaked, but certain games allow settings to be changed so this may be worth looking into.  Moreover, some games aren’t dependent on online features and therefore players will be able to play exclusive Star Wars content without closing their eyes and shooting like a Stormtrooper.

Minecraft is making Baby Yoda available to players, and as a game with offline options, it is likely to be a lot more spoiler-free than Fortnite or Battlefront. The issue that will face many players is seeing the film quickly so that they can return to the games that they enjoy. Of course, discussion boards and social media will also be filled with information about The Rise of Skywalker. Although no one wants to disconnect from the internet, it may be an idea to stick to offline activities, as it should also be outlined that Battlefront 2 may once again become spoiler-filled.

Battlefront 2 has introduced BB-8 into the game and, this along with more content that is sure to come, may bring players back with news of the latest Star Wars film. While there is no guarantee that any of the aforementioned games will have spoilers from other players, staying offline will guarantee a spoiler-free experience. Of course, seeing the film as soon as possible also mitigates the risk of information slipping from friends. It is tough to stay off the grid, but investing in campaign games may be the way to avoid being disappointed. Fortunately, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order offers a campaign game for those who need a Star Wars game but can’t make it to the cinema immediately.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will conclude an opinion dividing trilogy. For better or worse, the new trilogy has strayed from the beaten path and explored new ground in the Star Wars canon. Naturally, this has upset some fans, and they reacted by putting out spoilers online. For those who have managed to avoid information about the films, there has been plenty to spark the imagination and reignite an infamous franchise. For many, a spoiler-free conclusion will be enough of a reason to not go online; for others, it may be a good excuse to start playing a campaign driven game for a change. Either way, players should watch out as the internet is full of spoilers.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives in cinemas on December 20, 2019.
