How Does YouTube Pay?

Content creators do not get paid for posting content on YouTube. Instead, they get paid for the ads in their videos. The primary source of money for content creators on YouTube is AdSense. This is a network from Google that deals with advertising on various channels, YouTube included.

AdSense pays YouTubers when they add short ads at the start, middle, or end of their videos. These pop up when viewers are watching their content. Although some of these ads can be annoying, they are the content creator’s way of making money.

Advertisers pay Adsense, who then pay YouTubers who display the ads in their content. This happens when a viewer clicks or watches the advertisement. However, the process isn’t automatic. Instead, you join the AdSense program.

YouTube Monetization and Analytics

Advertisers who promote their content through AdSense have two payment options: Cost-Per-Click (CPC) and Cost-Per-Mille (CPM). In CPC, the advertisers pay when a viewer clicks on the ad. In this case, your revenue depends on the number of viewers clicking on the ad. On the other hand, the CPM, also known as the cost per 1000 views, shows the amount an advertiser pays to show ads in your videos.

Therefore, as a YouTuber, you get paid for the number of people who watch the ad video. For it to count as a view, the viewer has to watch it for more than 30 seconds. This means that you don’t get paid if you have a mid-roll ad (which comes in the middle of your video) and your viewer skips the ad before watching it for at least 30 seconds.

However, the two metrics, CPM and CPC, don’t actually show what you’re earning. That’s where the RPM (Revenue Per Mille) comes in. It shows how much you’ve earned per 1000 views (after the YouTube revenue share). Besides ad revenue, RPM also includes revenue from Super Chats, Memberships, and Super Stickers.

Joining the YouTube Partner Program

These ads don’t come automatically after you start a YouTube channel. Instead, you need to be eligible for AdSense and join the YouTube Partner Program. To join this program, you need to:

  • Have more than 4000 watch hours over a year (365 days)Have at least 1000 subscribers on your channelLive in a country where the YouTube partner program is available Create an Adsense account

After meeting these requirements, you can apply for the YouTube Partner Program and start earning. These requirements are meant to filter out low-quality content from YouTube. Therefore, if you are a beginner, focus on creating high-quality content that will attract traffic to your channel. Once your quality content has given you a community of over 1000 viewers, you can start making money.

After joining the YouTube Partner Program, some of the content that you post may be demonetized. This is especially true if your content does not abide by YouTube rules and policies. You may also get permanently demonetized if you have too many strikes. Always ensure that everything on your channel abides by YouTube policies to avoid such demonetization strikes.

How Much Does YouTube Pay?

The amount that YouTube pays ranges from 10 to 30 cents per ad. On average, creators make 18 cents per ad view. This results in about $18 for 1000 views. These figures are only estimates. It is impossible to get an actual figure since different factors affect the amount a YouTuber makes per video. These include keywords, content type, the length of the video, and how engaging it is. These factors explain why one YouTuber makes $0.02 per view, while another makes as much as $0.11.

Let’s look at these factors in depth.

#1: Type of Content

Some advertisers prefer to put a higher CPC or CPM on videos in niches such as affiliate marketing, crypto, real estate, investing, and stocks. That’s because they can reach more profitable audiences there, as opposed to videos such as fails, scary videos, or pranks.

#2: Video Length

When the content is longer, as is the case with Podcasts and tutorials, it can accommodate more ads, and that means more revenue for you as a YouTuber.

#3: Keywords

You can use tools like Google Ads to see the search volume and the keywords that have a high CPM. Once you’ve selected the right keywords that relate to your topic, you can use them in the title, video description, and add them to your tags.

#4: Engaging Videos

There is a huge emphasis on creating high-quality videos for your audience that they can relate to and find value in. Ultimately, this helps increase your viewership and revenue.

Does YouTube Pay Per Subscriber?

YouTube does not pay for subscribers to your channel. Moreover, the number of subscribers does not always determine your total earnings. Nevertheless, the more subscribers you have, the higher your chances of earning more money. This is because your subscribers will make your channel engaging, and an active community enhances earnings.

Additionally, subscribers are more likely to view ads than non-subscribers, especially if the ads are related to your content. Subscribers will also help you get paid sponsors outside AdSense.

How Can You Ensure the Ads Don’t Scare Away Your Viewers?

The truth is, few people enjoy watching ads. In fact, statistics from Hootsuite show that about 42.7% of Internet users worldwide have ad blockers. Unfortunately, ads are the most certain way to make money on YouTube. So, how do you ensure that the ads on your channel don’t send your viewers away?

#1: Carefully Place Your Ad Breakers

The type of video you post determines the best place to put the ad. For instance, placing a mid-roll ad may be annoying if you have a music video. The best place to have the ad is at the beginning or at the end of the video.

On the other hand, if you have a ‘how-to video’, you can use the mid-roll ads in between the steps. Besides, you can create enough suspense and place the ad toward the end. This way, the viewer might sit through the ad to get to the end of the video.

#2: Understand Different Ad Types and Learn How to Use Them

There are different types of ads that you can use on your video. These include:

  • Skippable ads – viewer skips after 5 secondsBumper ads – run for six seconds max at the beginning of the video and must be watched before your video can be viewedBack-to-back ads – ads that run for more than 5 minutesNon-skippable ads – ads that run for 15 to 20 seconds that the viewer can’t skipOverlay ads – ads that display a text banner

Carefully look at the different ad types and determine which best fits your content and viewers. Nevertheless, remember that each type will attract a different payout. For instance, a non-skippable ad will likely pay more than a skippable one.

What Are Other Ways To Earn Money on YouTube?

Aside from AdSense, there are other ways to make money from YouTube. Let’s look at some of them.

#1: Channel Membership

You can make money from your subscribers through channel membership. This option offers premium membership and has advantages like exclusive live question-and-answer sessions, member-only content, badges, and emojis. You need to be part of the YouTube Partner Program to offer channel memberships.

#2: Paid Sponsorship

Sponsors will pay you a flat rate to have their ad in your video. Moreover, they can pay more than AdSense. For the ad to have more impact on your viewers, you can use your voice and face to advertise instead of running an ad created by the advertiser. You are likely to convince them more since they trust you. Paid sponsorships work mainly when you have a big subscriber community.

#3: YouTube Premium

YouTube offers a premium membership that presents unique perks to its members. These include watching videos without ads, playing videos in the background, and downloading content to watch offline. YouTube shares the amount paid by premium members with content creators.

Therefore, you get paid when somebody watches your content on YouTube Premium. However, in this case, you get paid for total watch time and not per view.

#4: Super Chat and Stickers

Super chat and stickers are used in live streams and premiers. When a viewer buys a sticker or super chat, their comment or sticker gets pinned in the live chat. The more they pay (ranging from $1 to $500), the longer the time (up to 5 hours) the comment will be pinned.

You will get 70% of the amount paid for these stickers and super chats (YouTube takes a 30% cut from the earnings). You need to be part of the YouTube Partner Program to get this.

Affiliate links are the links that appear when a YouTuber mentions a product they recommend. The link can be in the description or appear as a pinned comment. Additionally, they can be clickable links in the video. When your viewer clicks on the link and buys the product or service, you get a percentage of the cost of their purchase.

How Can You Increase Your Earnings on YouTube?

The surest way to increase your earnings on YouTube is by increasing the number of your viewers. The more viewers have, the more they are likely to view ads, thus increasing your earnings. Moreover, when you have a huge community, companies might ask you to advertise their products or services. So, how do you increase your viewers?

#1: Ask Viewers To Subscribe and Turn On Notifications

Subscribed viewers are more likely to keep watching your content. Therefore, in every video, ask viewers to subscribe to your channel. Moreover, tell them to hit the bell for notifications, raining the chances that they’ll watch your content.

#2: Use Catchy Titles

Coming up with a YouTube title is easier said than done. On the one hand, you need a title your viewers will want to click on. On the other hand, the title can’t be clickbait. A clickbait title tricks the viewer into watching the video but does not deliver what it promised. Use the right keywords and have something your target viewers can relate to for an ideal title.

#3: Create Suspense

Every video your viewer watches should give them a reason to return to your channel. You can create suspense in your videos by keeping your readers guessing. Moreover, you can divide your content into a series, keeping the viewers waiting for the next episode.

#4: Use Keywords

Use the right keyword for your video in the title, description, and video tags. The keywords will make your video more accessible. But be careful not to overuse keywords. Too many keywords will cause more harm than good.

#5: Provide Quality

This may seem obvious, but most content creators compromise on this. Before posting any video, ask yourself, “Is this content educational, entertaining, or helpful?” If not, spend more time on it and ensure that your post is pure gold. This may take a while, but with more experience, you will easily create quality content that will attract more views.

Start Making Money From YouTube Today

You can make approximately $18 for every 1000 views. However, you can make more or less than this based on your niche or the type of video that you post. Create quality content with catchy titles and keywords to get more viewers. Additionally, engage in paid sponsorship, affiliate links, channel memberships, or Super Chats and Stickers to boost your total YouTube revenue.
