The next big update for Bungie’s Destiny 2 is approaching, and while it is still up in the air exactly what it might be, the transition into it is well known: the Empyrean Foundation. Along with a brief update about the recent Destiny 2 server maintenance and progress rollback, Bungie has now released full details about exactly how the Empyrean Foundation will work.

The new event comes on the heels of a host of problems that have been plaguing Destiny 2 for some time, not the least of which was the above mentioned progression rollback and several balance issues. The new event has some serious sweeping up to do, but considering the nature of the event, that may well be possible.

Empyrean Foundation is a large scale, co-operative event that will see players feeding their Fractaline to the Tower Obelisk to progress the event. While this will be available to all players, season pass or no, it does require them to have the Tower Obelisk unlocked, and the task will get progressively harder as the event goes on.

Specifically, the event will be comprised of seven stages, each requiring a larger amount of Fractaline than the previous one, with the rewards of a Triumph and an emblem being given to players who donate more than 5,000 Fractaline total. From there, more missions will unlock next season, as proven by some players who accidentally stumbled across the Destiny 2 “Worthy” mission. Here’s the community goals known so far for each stage:

In addition to consuming the stuff, the Tower Obelisk will also generate an amount of Fractaline each week equivalent to its resonance power, which is increased by upgrading other Obelisks. The message is clear: build up the Obelisks and pour in as much Fractaline as possible before the event is over, a task which, considering the climbing Fractaline cost of each stage, may be somewhat difficult if players don’t all contribute together. The incentive is there though, as the post practically confirms confirms what was only speculation before: that the Empyrean Foundation is the start of the next Season.

Asking the entire community to focus on a single task may wind up playing out well, especially since that unity will carry players into the next season with a sense of shared, rather than personal, accomplishment. The fact that upgrading the Obelisks ties into this Season’s “Savior” title doesn’t hurt either.

Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One
