Horizon Forbidden West has finally arrived, bringing with it a whole host of new machines, underwater exploring, and the next chapter in Aloy’s quest to save Earth, and the chance to find out what that sneaky Sylens is up to this time following the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. To do so, she must venture into the Forbidden West, the territory of the Tenakth tribe. It turns out, it’s pretty big, so chances are you’re going to need to take a few breaks. Here’s everything you need to know on saving your game in Horizon Forbidden West.
How to Manually Save in Horizon Forbidden West
Is There Auto-Save?
Yes, the game does have an auto-save feature, but from our experience, it happens far more frequently when playing through one of the main quests, rather than when you’re simply exploring the open world.
- To save your game, you’ll need to find a Campfire. These are marked on your map with a campfire icon, and can also be found at Settlements and Shelters. When standing next to a campfire, press Triangle to perform a Quick Save, or press Square to perform a Manual Save. From our experience, a Quick Save simply overwrites your existing save file automatically while pressing Square for a manual save will allow you to create a new save file, or choose which file you want to overwrite. You can also fast travel from Campfires for free.

You can check when your most recent auto-save was by pressing Options on your controller and then going to the ‘Load Game’ option in the pause menu. This will bring up all of your save files, and any with [Auto] at the end are auto-saves.
